– The current political climate, which is both populist and repressive, makes it more important than ever to present research with power-critical and feminist perspectives, says Sara Skott, one of the researchers from Mid Sweden University who are part of the relay.

The Gender Relay is a national event between most Swedish universities that conduct research and teaching in gender studies. The relay is always arranged around International Women's Day 8 March, this year the relay takes place at Östersund/Staare library on Tuesday 12 March. It involves researchers in various disciplines who use critical gender perspectives briefly presenting their research – and then handing over the "baton" to the next researcher.

Violence among young people is part of the relay

Sara Skott's research focuses on violence in young people's everyday lives. The research project she is conducting is called "Violence in Everyday Life" and aims to understand and prevent exposure to violence and violent practices among young people. Previous research shows that young people are exposed to violence in many environments, from home to school to online, but also that young people often normalize the violence.

"In my presentation during the gender relay, I will describe how young people in Sundsvall and Timrå understand violence that occurs in their everyday lives, how they define violence and what strategies they have to avoid the violence they are exposed to.

"Although most researchers agree that violence among young people is an important problem, very little research has been done on how young people themselves define violence and what everyday practices they have in relation to violence. This knowledge is important, both for us to understand how violence is actually experienced by young people, but also for us to ultimately be able to prevent young people from being exposed to violence.

The goal is for Sara Skott's research to lead to in-depth knowledge that in turn can be used to create strategies to avoid violence in the future.

Several interesting research topics from Mid Sweden University

In addition to Sara Skott, Lovise Haj Brade, Sara Nyhlén, Signe Bremer, Sara Svedenmark and Lasse Reinikainen will present their current research during the Gender Relay. The gender-related research is presented from a variety of subjects, such as political science, criminology, social work, sociology and gender studies.

The Gender Relay is open to everyone. It is arranged in Östersund as a collaboration between the Forum for Gender Research, FGF, and Östersund/Staare library. It starts at 12.00 on Tuesday 12 March.
