During the second year of the program, you can choose specialization: Autonomous sensors, Power electronics, Smart cameras, Detectors and multispectral measuring systems and Intelligent systems. Each specialization is given in close collaboration with a research group and partner companies.
Autonomous Sensors
Description:
Sensors and sensor systems are increasingly used in many application domains, such as industrial and process automation, environmental monitoring, and smart cities. A consequence of this is a growing demand for these systems to operate more autonomously and to be less dependent on existing infrastructures for energy supply and data handling.
This specialization provides you with a thematic semester on enabling technologies for autonomous sensors. You will learn about low-power techniques and methods for energy harvesting that enable sensor systems to operate energy-autonomously. Moreover, you will learn about embedded machine learning to bring modern data analysis approaches as close to the origin of the data as possible.
Courses:
Low-power and energy-autonomous systems, 7.5 ECTS
Machine learning on embedded systems, 7.5 ECTS
Specialization project within autonomous sensors, 9 ECTS
Scientific writing and research methods, 6 ECTS
Power Electronics
Description:
Power electronics are increasingly used in the electricity grid, electrified vehicles and to supply power to all electronic equipment used in modern society. The need for competence and new improved systems in power electronics is constantly growing.
The specialization provides a thematic semester on enabling technologies for power electronics. You will learn the basics of power electronics circuits, analysis, design and control.
Courses:
Power converter analysis, 7.5 ECTS
Control of power converters, 7.5 ECTS
Specialization project within power electronics, 9 ECTS
Scientific writing and research methods, 6 ECTS
Smart Cameras
Description:
Smart cameras are typically used as sensors for contactless measurements of parameters associated with objects and surfaces within areas being monitored, often in combination with active illumination. These cameras are often connected to a computer communication network. Smart cameras typically include computational resources for refinement of captured data into information. This refinement leads to minimization of communicated data volumes. Robots, autonomous vehicles and process automation are examples of application areas.
This specialization provides a thematic semester on technologies for the design of smart cameras. You will learn about image sensors, optics, illumination and algorithms for classical image analysis using machine learning. You will study in-depth technologies for the design of logic and signal processing systems on chip (SoC).
Courses:
Imaging metrology, 7.5 ECTS
Smart camera systems, 7.5 ECTS
Specialization project within smart cameras, 9 ECTS
Scientific writing and research methods, 6 ECTS
Detector and Measurement Systems
Description:
Multispectral measurement systems are important for selective measurement situations, such as optimization of industrial processes and environmental monitoring. Modern sensor technology can verify if a final product contains the correct composition or if waste contains harmful substances. The challenge is quick and effective identification of substances or constituents directly on site.
The specialization provides you with a thematic semester ranging from manufacturing processes for detectors to end use in a measurement system. You will learn about functions of different detectors and how large data streams and modern data analysis methods can be implemented in a measurement system.
Courses:
Semiconductor detectors and measurement technology, 7.5 ECTS
Analysis of large data streams in simulations and measurement systems, 7.5 ECTS
Specialization project within detector and measurement systems, 9 ECTS
Scientific writing and research methods, 6 ECTS
Intelligent Systems
Description:
Machine learning and deep learning systems are becoming increasingly important in the development of both society and industry. These technologies are important parts of data-driven development that is integrated into cloud solutions but is becoming more and more an important part of measurement systems and embedded systems.
The specialization provides a semester in intelligent systems focused on embedded systems, but the knowledge can also be used in several other areas. You will learn machine learning for embedded systems and deep learning for image analysis and time series.
Courses:
Machine learning on embedded systems, 7.5 ECTS
Deep learning, 7.5 ECTS
Specialization project within intelligent systems, 9 ECTS
